Ruining the Moment: Volume 1

It’s Christmas time and 4th Letter is in the spirit!

See?

Over a year ago, a class act by the name of Chinaman7000 created a very special thread at the Something Awful sub-forum Batman’s Shameful Secret. Called “Let’s Ruin the Moment”, people would take an impacting moment or scene from comic history and meddle with it. You would see Ultimate Mr. Sinister shoving a content Ultimate Xavier down a wheelchair ramp or Tomorrow Woman’s dying words to Superman being about how much she saved with Geico. It’s very fun and at times incredibly funny.

I’ve made a lot of images for those threads (the first thread got too long) over the past year and two months. When I started, I didn’t have any decent image-manipulation programs, so I had to deal with MS Paint. It was a disaster. Then I got Paint Shop Pro. That was also a disaster. But eventually, my understanding of the program got better and I still use it today. I could get Photoshop like any other good citizen, but I have a strong case of Stockholm syndrome.

Because there are 4L readers here who haven’t paid the $10 to be part of the Something Awful forums, I decided that from time to time, I’d post a batch of these. At least mine and any that are made by people associated with me (like hermanos). I don’t want to be yelled at by anyone for Ebauming their images, but if anyone wants me to showcase their work, just give me a ring.

We begin with the final issue of Infinite Crisis. People were pretty annoyed at how Superboy Prime whined and cowered while awkwardly introducing which Flash was attacking him. I decided to have fun with it.

When Superman was gone and Cyborg Superman showed up, his initial debut still gives me chills to this day. Originally, he picked up the plaque of Superman’s death and burned it to ash, before flying off with the message that he was back.

This image only makes sense if you’ve been watching wrestling at all in the past 2-3 years. If so, my condolences. It’s based on Booster’s discovery of Rip Hunter’s ramblings in 52.

This is based on I Can’t Believe It’s Not Justice League, when Guy and Fire were pulling Ice out of Hell. I don’t know what I was thinking.

Remember Marvel vs. DC? Everybody was so pissed when Wolverine beat up Lobo, a guy who could go toe-to-toe with Superman and come out laughing. Well, I decided to fix that fight.

This is one of my earlier ones, meaning it’s not very good. Based on the legendary cover to Green Lantern/Green Arrow.

Speaking of great comic covers, remember those months when I blabbered about What If comics non-stop? Well, here you go.

hermanos made this one. Apparently Batman’s origin needed more violin samples from the Psycho theme song.

Magnus and Dee Snyder are two old guys who really need to give it a rest. From the beginning of House of M.

And from the end of House of M, here’s that time Dr. Strange turned down Spider-Man’s demands for a mind-wiping.

When Johnny Storm discovered Namor during the early days of Fantastic Four, he sure had a funny way of revealing his identity.

Gigantic spoilers for anyone who wants to read Annihilation. Drax has been stalking Thanos through the cosmos for years. Now Drax has a gift for his enemy.

Nextwave sure is funny, especially with the newcomer Captain guy. Originally, he used to call himself Captain ****, suggesting he was named after something raunchy. I filled in the blank with something different and the conversation has a whole new meaning.

Last for now, one of my all-time favorites. This is why Mark Millar doesn’t write for 52. Well, other than that whole Marvel exclusive contract thing.

There should be a new update of Deadshot’s Tophat within the next couple of days, as well as another little surprise.

Merry Christmas, true believers.

  1. Man, I hate to toot my own horn, but that Batman/Flipmode Squad edit is the best thing I ever did. It’s simultaneously cruel and hilarious.

  2. I like the one with the Cyborg Superman the most. It’s such a shame he’s so underrated as a villain in comicdom. I consider Cy up there with Luthor, Darkseid and Brainiac. Hopefully, he’ll get the respect he truly deserves. Word up!
