This Week in Panels: Week 196

June 23rd, 2013 by | Tags: , , , , ,

Welcome! It’s time again for This Week in Panels. A good sprinkling of random stuff this week, brought to us by myself, Matlock, Gaijin Dan, Space Jawa and Jody. Jawa has another My Little Pony comic panel included, meaning like clockwork, someone in the comments will complain about it.

While Batman and _____ has become inadvertently hilarious after Robin’s death, this issue takes the cake. Not that it tops the time Batman cut apart Frankenstein to see if he can use the same technology to turn Damian into the patchwork undead, but it’s the timing. Snyder’s Batman has shown him out of control and mad at himself, but there’s a sense of grounded sympathy in there and Batman’s shown as trying to work through it. Morrison’s Batman Incorporated shows Batman dealing with his grief via going over-the-top ridiculous in his attacks on Talia. Not to mention, both of those comics are taking breaks from all of that. Batman is doing Year Zero while Incorporated did a one-off about the Japanese Batman.

So when I see Batman’s still being an unbelievable super prick in Batman and Batgirl, I can’t help but think, “Oh yeah… Damian’s dead, isn’t he.”

Now panels.

  1. Too many thoughts . . .

    1. Did AoU touch every Marvel universe? I’m the type to read comics and put them back, so polybags are my nemeses. Also, I’d like to think most of Logan’s pain came from seeing his Onslaught-era look, seen on the far right.

    2. I went to Midtown Comics yesterday. They were selling t-shirts with Buddy’s emblem on it.

    3. Ramos didn’t draw that story. Also: when will Adam Warren’s A+X stuff get published?

    4. Is snake/slug/toad a rock/paper/scissors thing in Japan? Even if it is, I kinda wish Tsunade would ride into battle on a giant Tonton.

    5. Did Zoro grow a mustache? Or is that a weird “camera angle”?

  2. @Jason: I can answer your latter two questions.

    4. Naruto incorporates several elements of this Japanese folktale: Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari. Hence the importance of those three animals.

    5. Zoro is wearing a fake mustache. All of the Straw Hats are in goofy disguises while they infiltrate Don Quixote Doflamingo’s country.

  3. @Jason: A+X is always two stories. Ramos drew the other story.

  4. Please tell me that Namor got stabbed in the neck after he said that. Alternatively, that someone asked him when was the last time Atlantis had a war that (A) was more specific in its targets than “DEATH TO THE SURFARRRCE!” and (B) it won.

  5. Man, I just have no idea what the deal is with new avengers. More so when it comes to why it looks like Namor has wolverine hair.

Cross Manage this time killed me inside (and *this* week too). At the least all this last minute drama should give it an amazing ending. And if leaked information on 2ch holds true, it looks like it’ll be replaced (among others) by a new Toriyama comic, which is just about the safest bet for viz to jump on. So that’s nice. THAT’S FINE! I WON’T CRY!

    … I won’t…

    …*sniff*… Cross Manage… :negativeman:

  6. @Maxy B: If it makes you feel better, it’s longer than Barrage and Takama-ga-hara put together. That’s something, right?
