Wonder-Con is tomorrow!

The booths!  The people!  The smell of storm-trooper armor.  Me, skulking around the DC area hoping that someone will say something spoilerish like they did at Comic-Con.  Me staring at Gail Simone like a creepy fangirl who can’t manage a conversation – which I kind of am.  Oh well!

The panel that David and I and the theyFanboys are hosting on Saturday, 12:30, in room 220.

Already I’m thinking about the regrettable purchases I am going to make, the awkward questions I am going to pose, and the possibility of running into Kevin Smith in the halls.

Oh, it is going to be fantastic.

And seriously, I thought Birds of Prey was gone forever.  It was cancelled, people.  Cancelled and the characters parcelled out to to other books.  It was sold for scrap.

Well, ba BAM!

They are back in May, and they are back written by Simone.  With two new characters.  That’s like seeing the dog that ‘went to live on a farm upstate’ returned to you with a litter of puppies. 

And if they include Creote and Savant?  And Helena keeps up her weird-ass thing with Catman?

Hell, even if she doesn’t, and they don’t, I am a happy, happy person.

I realize that I am staking a lot of my happiness on the Return of Bruce Wayne series, but I just can’t seem to care.  Here are some scans from the first issue, via the DCU Source.

It would almost be worth it to be a cave person, even one of those pervy Clan of the Cave Bear cave people, if you got to see Batman take his utility belt to the stone age.

Why is this example of dudekissing stuck under the only sad line from ‘Tomorrow’?  It doesn’t make sense!  After all, this panel from Dark Wolverine #84 has everything.  Action, adventure, someone being a jerk, and it’s all in a title that is epic, overwhelming silliness.  Also, as I said before, dudekissing.

Why, because it’s Marvel, of course!

When David told me about Daken, Wolverine’s freaky son/clone who had mind-control sex powers that he used on everyone, I did not entirely believe him.  Now I see that it’s true.  Too bad he’s such a psychotic jerk (Daken, not David.  David is nice.).

DC, it’s about time you had some crazy, love-power-having bisexual characters blatantly made for rampant and gratuitous fangirl service.  Dick and Roy, separately and together, are half-way there already.  And they’re good guys!  Get on that!  I have faith in you!

Batman wearing a Bathead.  That will never stop being awesome, and I will always be a little bit placated whenever I see it.  That’s just how it’s going to be around here.

And oh my god, the clasp on the cape is another bat! 

DC, sometimes you are smooth.

Power Girl’s cat has been amazing and delighting us for decades.  It is Alfred to her Bruce, chocolate to her peanut butter, Simon to her everyone else on American Idol.  It’s the Candy in her land, the Trivial in her Pursuit, it adds the poly to her Mono.

I could go on.  Trust me.  I love that damn cat.

Here’s hoping the thing is always featured in the many Winnick issues to come.

This was a tough one.  Even the second issue of Birds of Prey looks grim.

But there’s still First Wave, and its unabashed pulp to fall back on.  I like The Spirit, though.  I like that it looks like Doc Savage is punching him in the nose.  And I like that the shadow of Batman’s hand looks like a cartoony claw.

It’s funny how David loved the idea of this series and I was luke-warm, and now I’m having much more fun with it than he is.
Of course I’ve only seen the first issue.

Thank you, those people who requested it.  I like when people miss the stuff I write enough to ask about it, but I’m not doing a play-by-play of the team-up/crossover, and here’s why:

Have you ever eaten a bad egg salad sandwich?  If you have, you’ll know it put you off eggs for a while.

I don’t think it’s a mystery to anyone what this month’s egg salad sandwich was, and even though I just sampled a corner, it put me off a lot of things.  I don’t want to think about people acting like jerks because continuity says they have to, or because they were in a relationship and apparently the only way to make that interesting is to have them fight.  I don’t want tragic, convoluted history or recriminations.  I don’t want one character to be all grrrrrr and dark.  I don’t want a crossover event for which I have to read a bunch of books in order to get one story.  I don’t want a female character framed in a rifle sight at the end of the issue, because apparently the only way I would be interested in reading the next issue is if a hero’s friends, family, or love interest is on the chopping block.

(Also I hate the art and the way they stick Leslie’s head on a twenty-year-old body in a clingy dress.)

Yeah, I read and I’m going to keep reading Batgirl, and next month’s issue looks good.  But I’ve eaten some very bad egg salad.  Those issues are like a quiche.  I know there’s some good stuff in there, like Babs and St Nick finally having a good time, flirting, each knowing that the other one has a secret and being intrigued by it.  I just don’t have the stomach for it right now.

Okay, this is technically today with spoilers, so I’ll cut it.

First Wave is exactly what I need right now.  No tragedy porn, no endless continuity, no terrible life-altering baggage; there’s just Doc Savage’s disregard for keeping his nipples covered and Batman’s Fearsome Bat-hug.

I also love that the victim looks about ten times as horrified at Batman saving her than she did when she was being threatened by a man with a rusty knife and poor dental work.
