255 Header

It’s time for another edition of This Week in Panels (Belated Version)! This week I’m joined by Gaijin Dan, Matlock, TheAnarChris, and Gavok.

Gavok and Matlock decided to have a fun time with Black Widow and Punisher this week. As best I can figure, the two comics are telling the same story, and so the panels from those two comics show the same thing but from different angles drawn by different artists. It’s fascinatingly fun.

I also picked up Superior Spider-Man for the first time ever this week, though I saw it less as purchasing an issue of Superior Spider-Man and more as purchasing a prologue to the upcoming Edge of Spider-Verse because that’s what it was pretty much billed as. They weren’t kidding, either. I don’t know how critical the issue will be when the ball gets rolling for real, but it definitely feels like this is where the event kicks off.

But enough of my yammering, let’s see some panels!

Much as I saw Guardians of the Galaxy last week, this week I saw the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie (the fact that there wasn’t a TMNT issue of any kind this week almost feels like an oversight).

After having seen it…my feelings are mixed. On the one hand, the movie isn’t nearly the disaster everyone was saying it was going to be since nearly the instant it was announced, but on the other hand it’s not really worth writing home about, either. It’s got some fun action scenes, the characters seem solid, they avoided messing up the key elements that make up “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, and there are some interesting ideas present, but its all strung together by a very lackluster plot that leaves a lot to be desired.

Still, on the other hand, it was fun to see them making use of elements from the 80’s series like Channel 6 and a couple of April’s supporting characters from that show (I’m half surprised Irma wasn’t included). Between what’s shown up in the IDW series, the current Nick cartoon, and now the movie, I’m sensing a lot of love for the original TV series. Which I’m loving in turn, since those are the turtles I grew up on.

Given that there’s already been a sequel ordered, maybe there’s hope that the next one will be a step up from this one. And maybe that we’ll get more reworked 80’s goodness out of it too.

Live action Bebop and Rocksteady, maybe?

  1. Has Superior Spider-Man become Quantum Leap or Sliders but with Spider-Man?

  2. @Mike Podgor:

Not exactly – long story short, SpOck gets sent to 2099, and while trying to get home, he accidentally winds up in a number of alternate timelines where he discovers that the Spider-Man of that reality has been killed before jumping back to 2099, and eventually discovers about this guy that’s been killing them, so he gets to work assembling an army of Spider-Men (and women) from various timelines in order to fight back and stop the mysterious killer.
