Fourcast! 19: Adam Warlock vs Alfred Beagle

October 5th, 2009 by | Tags: , ,

6th Sense’s 4a.m. Instrumental provides a prelude to our latest Continuity Off: Adam Warlock vs Alfred. As in, Batman’s Alfred versus the Golden Messiah.

I break Warlock down from Kirby/Lee to Jim Starlin to the current incarnation, a feat which takes forever, and Esther explains how Alfred a) is 90 years old and b) was in love with a woman who could be his great grand-daughter and was also just a little older than Tim Drake. Whooo!

  1. I wasn’t aware there was that much to say about Warlock but I can’t wait until I get to wi-fi so I can hear you talk about it.

  2. I haven’t listened to this one, but one reason I don’t plan to is because, in the past, the characters (that I’ve been familiar with, anyway) have been discussed like they and their history are nothing but silly. Obviously, any and everyone’s entitled to such opinions, but I didn’t expect and, for obvious geek reasons, I guess, don’t like to hear that kind of thing from such a well put-together comic-focused blog. I’m not feelin’ the love. Instead, I’m feeling something that there’s plenty of out there – comic book mockery.

I just thought I’d share that, for whatever it’s worth.

That said, you fine folks can write your asses off. More power to you.

  3. @West: I don’t really agree that we approach them as if they’re nothing but silly. All of the characters Esther and I have discussed, with the possible exception of Hawkman (though I like when he hits things with his mace), are characters that we have some measure of fondness for. Spider-Man is definitely my template for the perfect comic book hero, and I poked fun at him. I love Elektra, but she’s been through some things.

And I mean, it’s kind of fun to go through these characters we’re familiar with in a very specific way (my Spider-Man is from origin to like early ’70s, Esther’s Birds of Prey interest is mainly due to Simone, I believe) and look at their long and often tortured history. At some point, someone thought it was a good idea to have Spider-Man chase and try to murder his wife while angsting about it. That’s equal parts funny and horrible, and fascinating to explain to people.

We’re not coming at it from a position of distaste or disrespect, except for every time I mention Gavin’s favorite character Eddie “Big Wheel is a Better Villain Than Me” Brock. We’re sticking to characters we know and love, because those are the most fun. Thanks for listening otherwise, though.

Oh, go write an essay on Jubil “Blue Jay is Less Worthless Than Me” Lee.

  5. Good Fourcast as usual!
On the subject of Death, she showed up at Rick Jones’ and Marlo Chandler’s wedding (curiously, drawn as Endless Death) in Peter David’s Hulk and gave the bride a hair brush. Then she said she had to leave before Thanos showed up.
I was only nine years and was just getting into comics and as such had never read Sandman, didn’t know who Thanos was and had never heard the expression “brush with death” so it wasn’t until years later I realized what was going on in those two panels.

  6. I never picked up on that “brush with death” thing. Thanks.
