This Week in Panels: Week 193

June 2nd, 2013 by | Tags: , , , ,

Well, I’m exhausted. I spent much of the day driving when I wasn’t watching one weird-ass wrestling show live. CHIKARA’s Never Compromise was a fun show, but that ending sure was a thing that happened.

This week we say goodbye to Jeff Parker’s amazing Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers run as well as Eddie Brock’s supporting role in Venom.

Meanwhile, here are some panels by myself, Gaijin Dan, Jody, Space Jawa, Was Taters and Matlock.

That second Injustice panels makes me so, so happy.

Now here’s a cool mashup I discovered. “Broken Out of Love” by Mark Crozer (the theme to Bray Wyatt) mixed with “Seven Nation Army” by White Stripes.

I’ll be back on the Top 200 Fighting Game Endings list in a day or two.

  1. Not sure if it’s just be, but the DBZ panel isn’t showing up…

  2. @Czar:

    It’s not just you.

Also, to whoever is scanning those Cross Manage panels week after week, your scans finally convinced me to give it a try. I wasn’t sure I could get into a comic about sports, much less lacrosse, but I’ll be darned if I’m not enjoying the heck out of it.

  3. Whoops. Sorry about that. Image fixed.

  4. @Zach: That’s somewhat ironic, as I’m rather ambivalent about it myself. However, with Jump being digital, there’s very little effort involved in grabbing panels, so I try to find something interesting from each series. Except Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal, because I completely hate it. I’m having trouble with Nisekoi, too; it hasn’t really been doing enough to offset all the overused cliches in the plot lately. It’ll still do something nice/amusing or have some interesting art from time to time, so it hasn’t ended up on the ignore list with YGO! yet, but I make no promises for the future.

  5. @Gaijin D:

I hear ya. I suppose Cross Manage is doing juuust enough right for me to enjoy it, although I’d be the first guy to admit there’s some problems. Case in point, the characters haven’t been fleshed out nearly as much as I’d like. Still, from what I’ve read so far it seems like there are some really meaty ideas at the core of it. What do you do when your own body is holding you back from doing what you love? Should you stick with it or should you move on and possibly find something else you might be better suited for? Just a couple off the top of my head. Honestly though, it’s got me reading about lacrosse so points for that alone.

Another big reason I’m tentatively in the support camp for Cross Manage? It hasn’t turned into an out-and-out harem book, which is my big problem with Nisekoi. Can someone please explain to me why the girls always go nuts for the blandest guy in the whole story? No, wait, I know. It’s so the readers have an empty shell to insert themselves into. It’s Bella from Twilight all over again. Hey, great on the author for getting an anime adaptation, but I’m clearly not the intended audience for this one.

At least we can all agree on one thing: Zexal is a colossal waste of space.

  6. @Zach: Well done on totally being on the money with why harem manga have total ciphers as their leads! I’m a soft touch for Nisekoi and even *I* hate that nonsense.

(also go you for getting into Cross Manage, it’s such a gem, innit)
