This Week in Panels: Week 104
September 18th, 2011 by Gavok | Tags: panels, ultimate spider-manWelcome to the 2-year anniversary installment of This Week in Panels. This week I’m joined by David Brothers and Space Jawa. Jawa is the one to blame for the Deadpool panel. I said I’m done with that series and I’m sticking to it. I need to write up a retrospective on Way’s hit-and-miss run one of these days.
Also, you see that Herc panel? I wanted that to be the new header of 4thletter and David ignored my pleas. Stay tuned and I’ll give you the address on where to send the dead skunks.

The dialogue from that Red Lanterns panel was stolen word-for-word from that time I met Jeph Loeb.
New Avengers is my comic of the week. Bendis had been losing me a lot lately, but between this, Ultimate Spider-Man and the Revengers storyline, he’s been winning me back. It’s also the only good use of the stupid talking heads interview gimmick.
So remember when they killed Ultimate Spider-Man a few months ago and Space Jawa wrote his thoughts from that story arc? With the first issue of the new series, he’s written a bit of an addendum.
“I said I’d give the new series a chance at least through issue 1, and I’ve now carried through with that. Unfortunately, while the issue isn’t bad, it doesn’t do the job it needed to for me to stick with the series long term. I’ll give Bendis credit for setting up Miles as a distinct character from Pete, but on all other accounts the issue fails me. It doesn’t hit the ground running, fails to justify Death of Spider-Man, and doesn’t do anything to wipe the bad taste out of my mouth left behind by the closing storyline of the previous version of the series. I’m not going to rule out entirely the possibility of Bendis redeeming himself and giving me a reason to give the series a second shot somewhere down the road, but I’m also not going to be getting my hopes up on the matter. For now, I’m going to be using this issue as a jumping off point and wish the best to anyone who is willing to stick around for the further adventures of Miles Morales.
Adios, Ultimate Spider-Man. You will be missed.”
Well, I’m reading it, so consider it a wash, I guess.
New installment of Brave New World; Bold New Direction tomorrow. After that, This Year in Panels. See you then!
Batman and Robin #1: Wow. Nice lines. I hoped SOMEbody was going to actually RAISE Damian.
Fear Itself #6: Steve’s cool. Pissed Steve is cooler. This Steve used some extra words somewhere. It’s me 6 years ago.
Suicide Squad #1: Slad, you’s a bad mofo.
Ultimate Spidey#1: Llovely art. Compellingly sculpted. Like Jawa, I need justification for that which came before.

The tie-ins that I’ve read have been on the “good” side of the bell curve, for me.
by clay September 19th, 2011 at 13:49 --replyI know Steve is supposed to be the patient, collected general during a fight and all, but I’m really enjoying the end-of-his-rope, no time for Odin’s bull Cap from the last couple issues of Fear Itself. The last panel alone made it worth it for me.
by Lou September 19th, 2011 at 18:17 --replyHe is actually not married to Krona because I am married to Krona.
