Fourcast! 21: Batman Year 100: PulpHope

October 19th, 2009 by | Tags: , , , , ,

We’ve got a You Made Me Read This that’s five months in the making! Esther’s read Batman Year 100, and we have a nice discussion about it for around half an hour. We go over what makes Batman Batman, belly button physics, dentures and lisps, and plenty of other bits. After we discuss our favorite incarnations or styles of Batman, 6th Sense’s 4a.m. Instrumental plays and we go on our way.

The Batman “Dick, was I a good father?” scene is this one:

page14

I don’t know if it was like that in the original Infinite Crisis #4, but Chris Eckert’s Edited Crisis #4 > Infinite Crisis #4. I love it like a fat kid loves cake or a rap kid loves breaks.

  1. batman was not literally bruce, I’d say gordon was saying ‘I know you won’t tell me who you are, but you’re acting like this guy’.
I like the fact that we can’t know who he is.

  2. Actually the mask was modeled after a well made luchador wrestler’s mask and the boots were modeled after paratrooper boots. Pope actually goes out of his way to state how much he hates to see the “bootie” type of shoe/boot on heroes, and so he made sure to do that differently for his Batman project.

Also, I’d be willing to bet a tidy sum that Pope has never seen Batman Beyond. Yindel is from DKR.

I totally agree with David regarding the definite position of this book firmly in the top ten of Batman stories.

Lastly, DK2 is amazing and yet I can totally see why Esther doesn’t like it.

  3. I agree with edc. I didn’t see the Batman of the story as being THE Bruce Wayne Batman. But I think it’s left unsaid who he truly is just to give us that idea that maybe somehow it is, to put us in the same group as everyone in that comic who isn’t in his inner circle.

Given the hints from the comic, I myself like to figure that he is Bruce Grayson, descendant of Dick. Especially when you look at what he says when the telepath tries to identify him.

  4. Here’s a link to editied crisis – http://poeng.radinfinitum.com/Edited Crisis 04.cbr if anyone wants more of that.

his smile and “you’ll never know” to the telepath
    were the best part.

  6. I personally didn’t care if it was Bruce or not, I’d like to think it was him as much as I’d like to think it was Damian the 3rd, the fact he’s Batman and he’s still being awesome 100 years later was enough for me.

    but yeah, top 10 easy.
