Fourcast! 72: Year in Review!

January 3rd, 2011 Posted by david brothers

-Seventy-two!
-Year in Review!
-Can’t believe we’ve done seventy-two of these things.
-Good golly, Miss Molly.
-We liked this year, though.
-It was a big year, so we talk about a lot of things.
-You know how that goes.
-We like a lot of stuff.
-We talk about reading real books, too.

Fourcast! 71: The Most Beautifullest Time of the Year

December 20th, 2010 Posted by david brothers

-It’s Christmastime! So what better things do we have to talk about beyond:
-Superheroes!
-and!
-Religion!
-We dig into adherents.com for a free-ranging conversation about superheroes, religion, realism, yadda yadda.
-But first, Gavin got Esther a present.
-Later, we mention this cover:

-Shortly after that, I mix up Naif al-Sheikh, the awesome no-nonsense political dude from Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke’s excellent Justice League Elite and Talib Beni Khalid from Greg Rucka’s pretty good Checkmate.
-I remember wondering why Rucka didn’t just use al-Sheik when Checkmate started, but I guess they ended up being pretty distinct characters.

Fourcast! 70: Say Hi To The Bad Guy

December 13th, 2010 Posted by david brothers

-We cold open on a discussion of a recent issue of Scott Snyder & Rafael Albuquerque’s American Vampire.
-Esther doesn’t like Skinner Sweet much
-And she doesn’t believe that his name is awesome, either
-This one is about villains, and how villainous is too villaionous for villains to be.

Fourcast! 69: French Existentialism Comix

December 6th, 2010 Posted by david brothers

-This is the best cold open ever.
-We start with a summary of Jean-Paul Sarte’s No Exit to kick things off.
-We argue over the ethics and logistics of Johnny Cash’s “I Shot A Man In Reno.”
-It gets surprisingly complex.
-Then we get to the point!
-This week’s show is about superheroes, settings, and the way they fit together.
-Sometimes the setting is a help to the hero, sometimes it’s a hindrance.
-Esther sums it up as “Let the hero fit the setting.”
-What heroes work well in certain genres?
-What heroes don’t work well in other genres?
-True story: a couple times during this podcast, my sink made noises like the blog was coming out of it.
-This made both of us go :O and turn our heads toward my kitchen.
-There was nothing in the sink, though, which I actually found more troubling than the noise itself.
-Regardless, I edited most of that stuff out, but maybe if you listen closely, you’ll get lucky.
-Maybe it’s due to the Ghostbusters II-esque bubbling, you can consider this the revenge of the Digressioncast.

Fourcast! 68: What’s It All About

November 29th, 2010 Posted by david brothers

-Ever disagree with someone and be like, “Wow, [that idea] is totally way off kilter and crazy!”
-I totally thought that when Esther wrote this post in response to a lightly NSFW post I wrote about Flex Mentallo and supersex.
-Why not do a podcast about our competing and almost definitely irreconcilable views on superheroes?
-So, we’re hashing it out on wax, and Esther realizes it before I do…
-But we don’t disagree very much at all, do we?
-Like I ever let something like that stop an argument.
-Regardless, I’m inflicting this conversation on you, dearest reader, so click play and tune in.

Fourcast! 67: The Bat’s Back

November 22nd, 2010 Posted by david brothers

-It’s been a long time, we shouldn’t have left you
-Without a Batman-focused, digression filled Fourcast! to step to
-Grant Morrison’s big Batman arc is done! The second phase of it, anyway.
-Good a time as any to catch up on the franchise and see where we’re at.
-Recorded this one the weekend before Batman Inc dropped, if you were wondering.
-You know the drill. Put it on your iPod and listen.
-6th Sense’s 4a.m. Instrumental for the theme music.

Fourcast! 66: Dead Wrong at New York Comic Con

October 18th, 2010 Posted by david brothers

-New York Comic Con Special Edition Fourcast!
-I borrowed my main man Pedro Tejeda from Funnybook Babylon and grabbed Gavin for a true FBB4l! connection.
-We talk about the con.
-I predict the cancellation of Young Allies, though I have it eight issues rather than six.
-We sing.
-We say mean things.
-We say hilarious things.
-There are music clips.
-Big ups to Joe from FBB for editing and recording this one for us.
-This is one of my favorites.
-6th Sense’s 4a.m. Instrumental for the theme music.
-If we want to talk to you, you better not listen, you might wind up in critical condition… we’re American Males.
-See you, space cowboy!

Fourcast! 65: Apocalypse

October 11th, 2010 Posted by david brothers

-Movie review!
Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is out.
-It’s an adaptation of Jeph Loeb and Michael Turner’s Superman/Batman, Vol. 2: Supergirl.
-Overall? We both think it was a mixed bag.
-Too short for what it was trying to do, too full of stuff to have anything but problematic pacing and editing.
-There were great bits (the last fight)
-There were awful bits (Lashina’s brand new backless costume)
-But yeah, 50/50 over here.

-We go over a few of last week’s comics.

Fourcast! 63: Hellboy: Whom Gods Destroy

September 27th, 2010 Posted by david brothers

-You Made Me Read This!
-David made Esther read Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, Vol. 3: The Chained Coffin and Others.
-It was good. A nice mix of creepy and funny, and Esther digs the character of Hellboy, too.
-Esther made David read Chris Claremont, Dusty Abell, and Drew Geraci’s Superman/Wonder Woman: Whom Gods Destroy.
-David made it two and a half issues in before tapping out.
-It may not be unreadable (there are a lot of word balloons to read), but it is unbearable.
-6th Sense’s 4a.m. Instrumental for the theme music.
-See you, space cowboy!
